Helio, the son of a jeweller, loves Kai, an orphan he found on the side of the road when he was a child. However, Kai is almost sold into slavery by Helio's racist uncle.
Feeling in danger, Kai volunteers to become a mercenary himself and chooses to leave Helio in order to take up a post as a border guard.
Several years pass and Helio regularly writes to Kai. Helio is somewhat unfulfilled and spends his days in constant frustration. そして数年の月日が経ち、定期的にカイに手紙を送るヘリオ。ヘリオはどこか満たされず、苛立ちが止まらない日々を過ごしていた。友人・スピネルの家督争いに巻き込まれ、窮地に立たされていたヘリオのもとに突如現れたのは、現在は傭兵として駐屯地にいるはずのカイだった──。
